Medellin – Colombia

I am so late with posting. I am currently writing to you from a couch at friends apartment in Mexico City. From Cartagena to Medellin the bus ride killed me.
Firstly, it was so freaking cold I couldn’t sleep I was freezing and I had to find anything in my bag that could keep me warm. It was just the 3 of us that we’re so unprepared. We had no idea how cold it would be. Everyone else seemed to have it right with the thick blankets and warm coats.
It started raining and we could see lightning and hear thunder. Lightning was striking everywhere. It hit a pole next to our bus that made a crazy loud bang noise. I am pretty sure that at this point everyone work up!
Thankfully it was all over in the morning and Medellin started out to be beautiful. We went with a few people to a city tour only to find out we couldn’t go to the tour (What were we thinking, showing up without booking a free city tour) . So 5 or 6 of us went and made our own little tour – this I guarantee was far more interesting as it involved walking down a pron street and drinking lots of beer! We walked around Medellin, saw some cool stuff saw loads of statues that were donated by Botero himself. Botero has a reputation of painting and sculpting people who are ‘thick skinned’. He over exaggerates  them and they are all over the place. We also went to a local dodgy market that had everything you could possibly buy but fake. After walking around, we went to a local bar had a couple of beers and headed back to the hostel where the 3 boys cooked. Life is good when that happens.

Rumours are true about Medellin. The women in general are beautiful, people here in general are beautiful, but in Medellin, girls as young as 15 ask for some sort of plastic surgery as a birthday present. This is the norm. Apparently – Actually not apparently its usually true in most cultures and cities,  the more beautiful you are the better life you have as the richer man wants the prettiest. Aside from that, medellin has beautiful people.
The next day we wanted a bit of an adventure and went to Guatape. It’s meant to be this amazing boulder in the middle of the lake. Apparently it’s huge and it over looks the entire lake. We get there with a local bus and it was pretty spectacular. The lake was green (not in a gross way) and it had loads of boats and stuff. We took 2 peddle boats and spent sometime there. We ate a lovely lunch, had Ice cream and beer, chilled for a bit and then headed back to Medellin.

It was a perfect day trip. That evening we felt like we had seen enough of Medellin and decided we wanted to go see some cool stuff like coffee plantations. Selento was perfect for that.
