Getting to selento was a mission. No night buses available and we had to get to Armenia before taking a local bus to Selento,
The journey to Armenia was alright and the journey from there to Selento was partially doable only because my friends and I opted to have a beer to ease the journey. I wanted to see all of Colombia and I felt like this was a full time job, moving from place to place within days and hours. (I know everyone who reads this and works will think- ha that isn’t a full time job).
As one of my friends from London puts it, ‘Selento is peace on Earth’. On reflection it is(was).
There is greenery all around you (I’ll have you know Colombia is ever more green I thought it would be, I believe it follows Brazil on the amount of green around) and its quiet, tranquil and beautiful – QUIET.
I was advised by one of my friends to go try out a chocolate peanut Brownie in an American diner. Done! That goodie melts so soft, it’s better than any other feeling. I came about this diner on our first night of arrival, the boys and I bumped into two amazing girls who we ended up spending the rest of Selento with. The 5 of us tired and ‘travel drunk’ went into the diner, explored a couple of wines and ate delicious burgers followed by killer deserts.
After a long first night, we had a vague plan of what to do the next day. We woke up early and opted to explore the little town. We decided to take some horses and visit the coffee plantation. We did take horses but it wasn’t to see the plantation it was just a super cool ride and go see some waterfalls.

I was being brave and trying to be calm with my horse but one of my friends kept making his horse gallop and the horse ran like the wind so my horse decided he wanted to do the same. As tiny as I am, I thought on several occasions that I was going to fall off. I did tear I think, I was so scared but I got used to it surprisingly fast. On several occasions I lost all control ( completely my fault) and started screaming like a little baby. It was funny for others (not so much for me). I eventually got the hang of it and sort of enjoyed my ride.
Several back pains and inner thigh pains later we went for lunch and chilled by the plantation. We decided that it would be an easy night so we sat in, played some cards drank some beer and waiting till the night turned to tomorrow.
The next day Tim the owner of the plantation gave us a tour of his place.
It’s amazing how much thought an effort has been put into coffee. Here I am sipping on Starbucks and Iv only just realised how long the coffee beans have to be grown, picked, washed, dried, peeled and roasted.
That evening we sat on a hill top danced dutty wine to some reggaeton trying not to whip the hair in the bonfire, drank crappy wine in a box and got happy. I remember desperately wanting to pee but there was no place. Myself and two other girls drunk and happy as we were, went behind the owner of the plantations car and as dark as it was, we did our business. It was soooo funny, It is a random thing to remember but i remember laughing so hard at what we were doing. I think the excitement came from the fact that the owner was sitting in his living room behind us separated by a window blocked by a faded curtain, good for us that he was engrossed in his TV series.
We then went to this bar after where you throw rocks on fireworks and if they explore you gain points. It’s super strange but it was fun!!!!
Alot of the time I just sat and watched the greenery. So much land so many opportunities, people know what they want and they live well and happy.
Selento is tiny, but has taught me a lot. It’s beautiful and it’s relaxing. It is the one place where alot of reflection can take place. You meet interesting people who share their stories with you and you feel blessed that you had many stories to share with them too.
I have to get to Bogota now, I need to catch a flight from there in 3 days. Bogota here I come. Xxx
