Recently more than before, I have had my girlfriends complain on their bodies.. ‘Im not slim enough’ ‘My legs are too fat’ ‘My ass has stretch marks’ and ‘I hate the way I smile – I look so ugly’. Yet if you see these girls, you would be blown away by their beauty.
This got me thinking that almost every girl/lady I know is somehow a victim of themselves. We can have the longest legs, the silkiest hair and flawless skin – yet we highlight the imperfections in our perfection. As a result, we tend to see what only is wrong and when others tell us different, we fail to see it – We don’t believe it!
I am not here to tell you that I have figured it all out and I know the perfect solution to feel as good as you look. Firstly, being good looking is JUST a bonus – It gets you noticed much faster and there is a quick attraction to both males and females. I don’t want to sound all preachy and repeat what most of you would have heard ‘It is the inside that counts’ – In fact, every time I read some crap like that, I get mad, because that is not a solution – Just because you tell that to me, I am not going to believe it – Heck you can tell me 1000 times that I am beautiful and believe you me, I certainly don’t feel it.
Being attractive is one thing, feeling attractive is another.
Its hard to fully understand why us girls feel like this – YES we all do, I can tell you hand on heart I have felt like this more than 3000 times!
Most of the books I have read on ‘self help’ have something to say about ‘Beauty is seen when confidence rises’…’It is when we are happy with ourselves, we are happy with what we look like’… and the infamous ‘Beauty lies within the eye of the beholder’. From all these, the thing I HAVE noticed that IS consistent in all our complaints, is that we are comparing ourselves to the definition of beauty held by society – and by society, I don’t only mean magazines and fashion columnists (even though they technically dictate OUR definition of beauty), but also, society that we surround ourselves in.
In some societies, dark skin is beautiful and in others not so much, the gap between our teeth is a trip to the dentist and others stick tools in their mouth to create that gap.. but who is society to us? Society is something we can’t get rid of – lets face it, Society is always going to be there – Always going to outline our flaws intentionally or unintentionally. One thing I can tell you is that it isn’t easy to 100% love your body in an instant. We have grown up thinking that Nobody’s perfect and taken that literally – Even the ones that did feel good, we subconsciously find a ‘flaw’ to dwell on – because Nobody’s perfect, right?…. WRONG.
Lets keep it simple girls, lets stick together and instead of standing and scrutinising our bodies from head to toe, lets learn to be. You can’t change the way you look – Heck you shouldn’t feel like you want to change the way you look! Lets change the way we see our body in a negative manor as our body is our temple. We should worship and work together to fight our insecurities.
